Welcome to Pine Island Farm the home of historical Mayham Pond.
Located in scenic Gilboa, New York, Pine Island Farm sits along the old rail bed of the Delaware & Eastern Railroad and the once South Gilboa train station.
"For many years the South Gilboa train station was a popular stop along the Railway. In the winter months "Ice harvesting" from the pond was a fruitful business and well appreciated by the local dairy farmers who needed to keep their products cold on their way for sale to New York City."
Born in a one room log home, his son Benjamin Stephan Mayham would inherit the farm in 1848. He would establish his mark by carving out “Mayham Pond” a 38 acre lake out of the Bear Kill and the 8 acre peninsula that extends in to it known as “Pine Island”. He was known as a prosperous and important area farmer, employing many farmhands. There was a creamery, sawmill, and gristmill at the dam located on the South end of the pond. He was also known to always be the first in the area to own new inventions such as the kerosene lamp, mowing machine, and hay tedder just to name a few. He launched the first sailing vessel on the pond in 1902.
While the property has remained a farm throughout the years, in 2005 it was transformed into 38 lots and Pine Island Farm Property Owners Association was born. The owners not only share in the area’s rich history but enjoy the splendor of nature in Pine Island Farm. With majestic mountain views, rolling hills all about, Pine Island is nestled in place offering its 40 foot pine tree canopy, with areas to fish, camp and picnic as well as the beauty of Mayham Pond that surrounds it.
The Old South Gilboa train station no longer exists but the old rail bed that runs along the Pond still remains allowing access to the now 26 mile Catskill Scenic Trail. http://catskillscenictrail.org/
You can walk, run, hike, bike, cross country ski or horseback ride and view the beautiful rolling mountain vistas, and local farms that span from Roxbury to Bloomville.
BENJAMIN S. MAYHAM MILL
(Brewster’s Mill), South Gilboa, N. Y.
John Brewster (in Child’s Gazetteer, called John Breaster) was a New
Englander, a descendant of the famed Elder Brewster who came over on
the Mayflower. After the Revolution he moved to South Gilboa, then a
part of the Town of Blenheim, where some of his descendants still live,
and is said to have built a mill and mill-pond, which powered the
machinery. This mill later came into the possession of Benjamin S. Mayham,and the large pond which still exists, became known as Mayham’s Pond. This lies just above the road on the Stamford side, which road leads from South Gilboa to Rt. 30. So far as I know, no trace of the mill site now remains.
